About this trip

Two Tours in One: Michael Collins & The War of Independence – West Cork Historical Experience

Welcome to Cork, Ireland’s “Rebel County,” where dramatic coastline, rolling countryside, and revolutionary history combine in one powerful journey. This immersive West Cork tour follows the story of Michael Collins, one of the most influential figures of the Irish Revolutionary period (1916–1922), and explores the key sites connected to Ireland’s fight for independence.

Known as “The Big Fella,” Michael Collins was a central strategist in the Irish struggle for freedom. Throughout the day, we visit the principal locations connected to his life, leadership, and legacy, alongside significant War of Independence ambush sites in West Cork. Along the way, you’ll hear local insight and historical context that bring this defining period of Irish history vividly to life.

Tour Highlights

Crossbarry Ambush Site
Under the leadership of Tom Barry, the IRA’s West Cork Flying Column defeated British forces despite being heavily outnumbered. This was one of the most daring and strategically significant engagements of the War of Independence.

Béal na Bláth
At Béal na Bláth, we stop at the site where Michael Collins was killed in 1922. A monument now marks this historic location. Photo stop.

Kilmichael Ambush
One of the most significant IRA victories of the war, where Tom Barry’s Flying Column overcame British Auxiliaries, shattering the myth of their invincibility. Photo stop.

Dunmanway
Birthplace of Sam Maguire, who recruited Michael Collins into the IRB in 1909.

Clonakilty

In the vibrant West Cork town of Clonakilty, we stop for lunch and visit the Michael Collins Centre, dedicated to his life and legacy. We also view the Michael Collins Monument, unveiled in 2002 on the 80th anniversary of his death.

Woodfield
Visit the birthplace of Michael Collins, where he spent his early years.

Sam’s Cross
We stop at Four Alls Pub, the last place Michael Collins is said to have had a drink on the day of his death.

Scenic Coastal Return

Leaving Clonakilty, we take the coastal road back toward Cork City, passing Timoleague Friary (founded 1240) and the historic harbour town of Kinsale, known for its colourful streets and rich maritime heritage.
